The Siachen Glacier Fire: A Tragic Night of Heroism

Serving as the Regimental Medical Officer with the 26th Battalion of the Punjab Regiment, Captain Singh was stationed at the Chandan Complex in Siachen. Around 3 a.m. on July 19, 2023, a devastating fire broke out, reportedly caused by a short circuit. The flames quickly spread, engulfing an ammunition stockpile and nearby fiberglass huts, posing an imminent threat to the stationed personnel.

Captain Anshuman Singh’s Heroic Actions

The young officer immediately sprang into action, prioritizing the safety of his comrades over his own. He successfully rescued four to five soldiers trapped in the surrounding huts that were quickly filling with smoke and fire.

After ensuring their safety, he attempted to retrieve critical medical equipment from his own hut. However, the high-velocity winds intensified the fire, trapping him inside. Despite multiple rescue attempts, Captain Singh succumbed to severe burns and smoke inhalation, making the ultimate sacrifice for his fellow soldiers.

Posthumous Honor: Kirti Chakra Awarded to Captain Anshuman Singh

In recognition of his exceptional bravery and unwavering dedication, Captain Anshuman Singh was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra. The award was presented by President Droupadi Murmu on July 5, 2024, to his widow, Smriti Singh, and his mother, Manju Singh.
